SYMPHONIC BANDS

LAHS offers two levels of SYMPHONIC BAND. Intermediate SYMPHONIC BAND is comprised of mostly 9-10th grade students and is the default entry point for all symphonic band students. Advanced WIND SYMPHONY is made up of mostly 11-12th grade students and enrollment is by audition only. Both course are offered as PE and UC Approved Fine Arts options. These ensembles focus on instrumental skill development through the performance of classical, traditional, and contemporary wind band repertoire and include woodwinds, brass, and percussion instruments. Students will benefit from working with professional instrument coaches in every section. Classes meet daily with very few after-school rehearsals. Students perform at 4-8 events per year including school concerts and local/regional adjudicated festivals.

JAZZ BANDS

LAHS offers three levels of JAZZ ENSEMBLE. All Incoming 9th-grade students will be placed in JAZZ 3 with no audition necessary. JAZZ 2 and JAZZ 1 are advanced ensembles open to 10-11-12th grade students by audition only. Jazz bands perform at school concerts, local festivals, community events, and more! All students will have the opportunity to travel and perform including Reno Jazz Festival, Essential Ellington regional festival, and Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival.

STRING ORCHESTRAS

LAHS offers 2 levels of CHAMBER ORCHESTRA that focus on traditional, modern, and popular orchestral literature as well as music theory and music history. STRING ORCHESTRA is a beginning/intermediate level performance ensemble and does not require an audition for placement. CHAMBER ORCHESTRA is an advanced level performance ensemble that focuses on traditional, modern, and popular orchestral literature as well as music theory and music history.  It helps to play at a minimum Suzuki Level 3 or Certificate of Merit Level 3.  Placement into this ensemble is through audition only. The orchestras perform at school concerts, local festivals and will be traveling as soon we are allowed !!

MARCHING BAND

The LOS AL Marching Band is an award-winning, active, contemporary outdoor performance ensemble open to all winds, percussion, and color guard students in the Fall Semester.  The band begins rehearsals in the summer, and meets 3 days per week in the fall during 7th period. Performances include school and community events, football games, and regional marching band competitions. In recent years, several students have been selected to the prestigious US Army All-American Marching Band.  Recent travel includes the Hawaii Invitational Music Festival and the London New Year’s Day Parade 2017-2018.  Many of our students go on to perform with top college marching bands and drum and bugle corps.

DRUM LINE

The Indoor Drum Line is a dynamic, contemporary, competitive percussion performance ensemble open to students by audition only. In the fall, the drum line performs as an integral musical unit of the Marching Band featuring marching battery drums and a front ensemble.  In the winter and spring, the group competes in local, regional, and national competitions.  Rehearsals are three days per week beginning in December and competitions are weekends in February - April. Recent trips have included Dayton, OH for the WGI World Championships in Spring 2014, and Spring 2019, and LONDON for the 2018 New Years Day Parade. SCPA Scholastic Open Champions in 2019, the Griffins placed 5th in the nation at World Championships.

COLOR GUARD

The LAHS Color Guard is competitive, athletic dance theater using props as a visual expression of musical performance. This group is open to all interested students, regardless of dance skill level. This ensemble begins work in the summer and competes as a integral component of the Marching Band in the fall rehearsing three days per week and weekend competitions in October - November. In the winter and spring, the group competes in local, regional, and national indoor competitions. Rehearsals are held three days per week during the season, and weekend competitions take place February - April. Recent trips include WGI World Championships in Dayton, OH in spring 2016. The Griffins will be attending the 2020 WGI World Championships in Dayton, OH in the spring.
